Thailand Series (Post 3) ~ My Hike to Big Buddha Phuket
This is a photo essay of my hike to visit the 45 meter high statue that sits on top of a hilltop 400m above sea level on Phuket island. It’s located in the forest of Nakkerd Hills between Chalong and Kata. Chalong Bay lay in one direction while the other side looks down over Kata and the Andaman Sea.
Most folks take the open-air taxi’s up the hill.
I had this bright idea to hike up the hill at the crack of dawn.
How hard could it be, it was just a hill, after all.
Bright & early on the streets of Phuket
Yes, flat land…But don’t get too excited, not for long.
The sun is getting higher & higher and this “hill” is getting steeper & steeper
A much needed cute little rest stop
and then it’s back up the “hill”
with some pretty spectacular views of the sun rising
yeah, my view while hiking
Then another rest stop, which was much MUCH needed. This sure was turning into one big “hill”. But it’s the last rest before the big reveal….
Big Buddha Phuket
I join the many brightly colored pilgrims
At this point, I must admit, I’m feeling pretty washed-out in my sweaty hiking garb
but regardless of the almost 3 hour hike uphill, the view couldn’t be beat
Little Buddha of Phuket
always offerings to the elephant
many smaller Buddha’s across the grounds
Buddha’s in a row
Grounds the Buddha’s sit on
everyone wants to see the views the Buddha’s have every day
Wow, Kata and the Andaman Sea.
Big Buddha’s view of Kata and the Andaman Sea
then it was time to start my trek down the “hill”, but first a shot of my ever present followers
my view hiking down the hill, Chalong Bay
Can a rest stop get any better? Chalong Bay
When I finally was able to tear myself away from the Chalong Bay view and start hiking again, I was sorely tempted to hitch a ride with these folks. That was one f’in hill.
